Boating Skills

Boating skills take time to acquire, for example learning to sail requires practice. So if part of your plan is sailing and you have never sailed, find a sailing class or a friend that has a boat. Keeping asking people with boats if they need persons to crew. You'd be surprised how quickly you skills will improve and how many new friends you will make.

Gee - the list looks the same as Boat Knowledge! Why? Because not only do you need the knowledge about these topics, you also need to put what you learn into practice.

  • Boating and Safety - Read to learn boat (nautical) terminology and safety at sea. 
  • Navigation - Download free charts and start plotting your adventures. Learn to use Google earth to find places in the blogs you read.
  • Weather - Download free weather maps for your area and practice forecasting winds and tides. Discover "weather windows"
  • Boat Maintenance & Repairs - Volunteer to help friends with boats. Learn by doing.
  • Marine Engines - Volunteer to help friends with boats.
  • Sailing - Volunteer to crew for friends with boats. Hang around sailing piers and let folks know you are willing to crew.

Other Skills you might want to Learn
  • Blogging - Start a blog now, to record your adventure from the beginning while you are preparing for your adventure.
  • Diving - Find places to dive that don't need a boat. Learn to snorkel. Get a diving certificate, you don't need a boat to do this.
  • Photography - Start with your phone camera. Take pictures, edit them and learn to post them.
  • ​Video Blogging - Start by using your phone camera to video blog about your about your dream and the steps you are taking now. Let the adventure begin. YouTube beckons.
