  Adventures on Boats

All Adventures Start with a Dream - What is Your Dream?

This site was started because I started dreaming of sailing the world, actually it was because after I retired I was bored and needed a project. Even as a young boy I often dreamed of sailing the world, only then it was on a pirate ship. As I picked up on my dream I started reading books and magazines and searched the internet. The more I searched more questions arose: What do I need to learn? What kind of boat do I need/want? How much is it going to cost? And on and on. Thanks to the hours on the internet reading blogs, listening to podcasts and watching videos it slowly came together. There is just so much to learn, so much to absorb. The bits and pieces of information are out there and "the Google" and "the Bing" helped a lot. But what I did not find is one site that jumped started me with finding out about boats and real people out there adventuring. I needed help to put things in perspective and give me a starting point, a plan, advise, but alas I found none. So what I will attempt to do here is to create a site that pulls a lot of information together in one place and organize it in a way that you, the New Adventurer, can get a jump start on making your dream your reality by helping make sense of all the available data.

By no means is this site exhaustive, nor can it ever be, It is just a comprehensive starting point to get you going. So where to start? Let's start with my dream and then you modify it to help prepare you for your dream. For example: my dream is to sail around the world on a sail boat, a big catamaran to be exact. Your dream may be to motor across the great lakes. Some of the things that I need to learn, buy or have will be different than your needs, but a lot of them will be the same. I already have owned a boat, so I know how to sail, you may not. So you need to learn that.

Start Now
Being an engineer by training I tend to make lists, spread sheets and bookmark a lot of internet pages. Learn to do these three things starting now if you don't already do them.

As you read various boat blogs you will discover that there are never ending "to do" lists when you own a boat. If you have not done this yet then start now and make some lists. I would suggest that you keep the various lists on separate sheets of paper and in a binder so they don't get lost. If your more used to using electronic devices then create your doc files and spreadsheets, but be sure they get backed up often.

Let's get started and make some lists, humor me and make them in the following order.

Lists to Make
  1. Where do I dream about going?  Places to Go
  2. What do I know about boats and what do I need to learn? Boat Knowledge
  3. What applicable skills do I have and what do I need to learn? Boating Skills
  4. I need a boat. Boats
  5. Cool or necessary gear I should have. Boat Gear
  6. Who do I want to adventure with me? Shipmates
  7. How will I finance this adventure? Money
  8. When do I want to actually leave? Goals
  9. How do I get from here to there? Plans

Now that you have some lists, you need put things in perspective. The "Plan" is the map or chart (nautical map) that is going to help you reach your "Goal" (destination). In the real world, as you know, you need "Money" to buy boats, boat things and go places. There are always ways to do these things on just about any budget. You just need to figure out how you are going to adventure and keep adventuring on your budget. All of those adventurers out there doing "it" have figured it out and so can you. While you are doing that you can get busy with list items 1 through 5.
